study abroad loan providers in higher education
Study Abroad Loan Providers for higher education

Every student dreams of studying abroad. It has become a realisable dream today with many banks and NBFCs coming up with attractive education loan options. Therefore, you can experience a higher flow of students from India towards countries like the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and so on.

Why do you need an education loan?

Pursuing an education abroad is an expensive proposition. Reputed international universities provide scholarships to students. However, tuition fees alone do not comprise the requirements of the students when they go abroad for higher studies. They incur boarding and lodging expenses, and so on. The education loan is the best way to fund these expenses. The easy repayment schedules enable the students to take out a loan and pursue their studies. They get ample time for repaying these loans. We shall look at various education loan options in this article.

The options available

Almost all the nationalized and private banks have education loan products. The Reserve Bank of India has formulated the guidelines for the education loans, and all banks follow it in letter and spirit. You have some private education loan providers as well to help out these students.

The nature of expenses a student can incur

Studying abroad is different from pursuing education inside India. The student has to shift base to a foreign country. They incur a lot of expenses as follows. Remember, these expenses start much before the student boards the flight to the international destination. We shall look at each of these expenses, both before and after the departure of the student from India. We have a specific reason for raking up this discussion because there are financing options for these activities as well.

  • Pre-departure Expenses – We shall classify these expenses into two parts, the pre-admission stage, and the post-admission stage

Pre-admission stage expenses

Foreign universities offer various courses for students such as graduate courses, post-graduate Masters Degrees, post-graduate diplomas, certificate courses, and so on. Usually, the trend in India is to go for the post-graduate Master’s Degrees. The preparations for these courses start from the final year of their degree course in India. Let us look at the various expenses a student incurs while preparing for these courses.

a. GRE (Graduate Record Examinations)

The Educational Testing Services conducts the GRE. It is compulsory for students intending to pursue their higher education in countries like the US. Other countries like Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and so on do not require the student to appear for the GRE.

The GRE is an aptitude test that requires the students to prepare well in subjects like English and Maths. Various private institutions conduct GRE training courses for interested students. Naturally, they have their fee structure. Similarly, the students have to register for the GRE. As of today, the fee for registration is $205. You can send your scores to five universities in the US free of cost when you register for the GRE. Should you wish to apply for more universities, you need to pay extra.

b. IELTS/TOEFL/PTE

In addition to the GRE, the students have to appear for any of the following tests to prove their efficiency in the English language. Students who are not native English speakers should give this test and attain a satisfactory score to be eligible to seek admission abroad.

  • IELTS International English Language Testing System – Minimum acceptable score 6 to 6.5 overall
  • TOEFL Test of English as a Foreign Language – Minimum acceptable score – around 90 and above is a good score
  • PTE Pearson Tests of English – Minimum acceptable score – 58 overall

These exams also require the student to register by paying substantial fees.

c. The application fee for colleges abroad

When you apply for colleges in the US, you have to pay the application fee that can range between $50 and $100. Usually, a student applies for a minimum of 5 to 6 colleges. It costs you money. It might not be the case with other countries, especially if you approach the universities through educational consultants. You do not have to pay the fees as the educational consultants receive commissions when the student confirms the admission and pays the tuition fee.

  • Post-admission stage expenses
  1. Tuition fee – Depending on the student’s academic performances in India, they are eligible for various scholarships. Almost all the colleges in different countries have some scholarships for Indian students. It reduces your tuition fee expenses by a considerable amount. In spite of the scholarships, you have to arrange for the tuition fee that can vary from college to college and from course to course. It can cost you anything from as low as ₹ 5 lakhs to ₹ 75 lakhs or more depending on the country, college, duration of the course, and so on.

Of course, you do not have to pay the entire tuition fee in a single instalment. These colleges and universities give you the facility to pay the tuition fee in stages.

2. Visa and Flight tickets – On securing your admission, you need to apply for your visa and book your flight tickets. You can incur substantial amounts for these activities. The education loan providers have products to finance these expenses as well.

  • Post Departure stage

Lodging and Boarding expenses – In addition to the tuition fee, you incur a substantial amount for your lodging and boarding. Almost all the universities have on-campus lodging facilities. However, students prefer to stay off-campus as the rates are comparatively inexpensive. These lodging and boarding expenses can also cost in the region of ₹ 10 lakhs to ₹ 40 lakhs for the entire duration of the course. The banks and NBFCs consider these factors as well while providing education loans for studying abroad.

Now, that we have seen the nature of expenses a student incurs for studying abroad, let us look at the financing options available to them by way of education loans from banks and NBFCs.

The nationalized banks, private banks, and NBFCs have attractive education loan products. We shall look at ten such options that can help students to secure education loans with ease. Before looking into these options, let us keep our documents ready to help them process the education loans quickly. The set of documents are the same across all banks and NBFCs.

Documents required for processing education loans for higher studies abroad

Every education loan will have a co-applicant in the form of a parent or a guardian. Both the student and the co-applicant have to keep these documents ready.

  1. KYC Documents
  • Identity Proof
  • Passport
  • PAN Card
  • Aadhar Card
  • Driving Licence

  • Address Proof
  • Passport
  • Aadhar card
  • Driving Licence
  • Ration Card
  • Registered Rent Agreement

2. Income Proof Documents – The co-applicant has to submit these documents. The repayment of the loan is the prime responsibility of the student. The schedule of repayment commences one year after finishing the course or six months after getting gainful employment, whichever is earlier. However, banks and NBFCs require the income details of the co-applicant to justify their processing norms.

  • IT returns for the last two years

Letter of Recommendation
Letter of Recommendation for higher studies – What are they?

When you seek admission to any foreign university abroad, the Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is one of the critical documents you submit. Let us see what a Letter of Recommendation is and how it can affect your admission prospects.

What is a Letter of Recommendation?

A Letter of Recommendation is a document that provides the Admission Officers a comprehensive insight into your capabilities and justifies why you deservedly qualify for admission into the concerned university. It enables the Admission Officers to obtain additional information about your skills, experience, achievements, and contributions to the institutions you have been connected with in your career.

Why do foreign universities insist on submission of Letter of Recommendations?

You submit your Marksheets and other certificates to prove your qualifications. You have the Statement of Purpose to justify why you chose the particular University and course to pursue your higher studies. However, the Admission Officers do not get your complete picture. The LOR provides this opportunity as it presents a different facade that enables the Admission Officers to correlate with the documents you submit. Therefore, never underestimate the power of a LOR. It is as vital as your Statement of Purpose and your resume.

What are the different types of Letter of Recommendation?

You can classify a LOR into two broad types based on the nature of the recommender.

a)     Academic Letter of Recommendation

A faculty member of the previous institute you studied in provides the academic LOR. Usually, the foreign universities call for multiple LORs, either two or even three. Some of the universities require you to follow a specific format that the recommender has to adhere to. The recommender can be teachers from your school or professors from the college where you last studied. It requires the recommender to highlight your achievements and accomplishments as a student in the course.

b)     Professional Letter of Recommendation

Specific courses demand the student to have work experience. The most common among such courses is the MBA in various categories. Many students pursue their standard post-graduate courses after a gap where they work and gain experience. Such students can also submit a Professional LOR. The significant difference between the two categories of LOR is that the professional LOR focuses on the applicant’s ability to work within a team, handle a crisis, and display leadership qualities. The MBA Admission officers look for such skills that are relevant to the course they apply for in the foreign university.

How do you draft a Letter of Recommendation?

Usually, a LOR is a 400 to 500-word essay highlighting the students’ strengths and weaknesses. One should include important things like nature as well as the tenure of the association of the student with the organization/institution. The foreign universities require you to follow a specific format. One of the crucial points to remember is that the LOR should be on the official letterhead of the university in the case of an academic LOR or the company letterhead in case of a professional LOR.

Another point to remember is that the LOR should not serve as an extension of the SOP. A LOR should highlight the aspects about you not mentioned in the SOP. It should be from the viewpoint of the recommender. Therefore, the ideal recommender is one who knows you well. It is a perfect situation if the recommender is a witness to the quality of work delivered by you and acknowledges your contribution to the institution/organization. The purpose of the LOR is to recommend your name and credentials to the university with examples and justifications as to why you deserve to get admission to the foreign university. A generic LOR does not have much value.

Understand that the Admission officers have to peruse thousands of applications of which yours is one. Hence, the best way to catch their attention is a well-drafted LOR. Your LOR should make you stand out from the crowd. Your SOP and LOR together can clinch you the coveted seat in the university. Hence, you should endeavour to make your LOR an impressive one. Let us look at what an impressive LOR is all about.

An Impressive Letter of Recommendation

·        Choose the right recommender

Choosing the right recommender to provide the LOR is equal to doing half the job right. Your recommender should know you well enough to justify your candidature effectively. The person should have a clear idea about the unique attributes, the project work, and the instances to cite in the LOR. It is also crucial for the recommender to provide details of your contribution towards the success of the project. Merely stating that you were an essential member of the team working on the project will not cut ice with the Admission Officers. They are looking for that extra spark in you that separates you from the rest. Therefore, your recommender should highlight your contribution and justify that you have played a stellar role in the success of the project. It is better to choose two recommenders who can offer a similar perspective but from different viewpoints.

·        Have unique content

Ensure that your LOR has unique content and not the run-of-the-mill stuff. You can ensure unique content if you choose your recommenders properly. It is better to have your professor provide your LOR rather than the principal of your college. The simple reason is that the professor has taught you the subject and guided you through your project. Such a person will be able to assess your strengths and weaknesses accurately as compared to the principal with whom you might have interacted on fewer occasions. Similarly, your immediate superior at your workplace will be able to produce unique content about your ability to deal with people and situations. The CEO of the Company you work for might not even know you well enough to give you an effective LOR.

·        Stick to the format

Many universities require you to submit the LOR in a particular format. Stick to it in its entirety. It makes the job of the Admission officers easy. There are instances of the Admission Officers corresponding with your recommender directly if they wish to clarify details. Some of the universities seek confirmation from the official email id of the recommender. Under such circumstances, your recommender should be able to recollect that they have provided the LOR to you. Sticking to the prescribed format ensures that you cut out the unnecessary information. You tend to be precise in delivering the info whereby you eliminate the common mistakes one makes while preparing the LOR.

Common mistakes to avoid in a Letter of Recommendation

Not all universities require the information in a standardized format. The chances of committing mistakes in a standard format are less as compared to a free format. Let us look at some of the common mistakes you make while preparing the LOR

·        Choosing the wrong recommender

Choosing the wrong recommender is worse than not choosing anyone at all. We have highlighted this fact in one of the earlier paragraphs. Some of the best examples of selecting a wrong recommender are the principal of your college of the CEO of your company. If you directly report to them, it should not be a problem. However, for a general student or an employee, the best recommenders are the persons they are in constant touch all the time. It can be your Assistant Professor or your immediate superior in your office.

·        No providing enough time to your recommender

Remember that your recommender has other work as well. Approaching the recommender at the last minute for your LOR can do you more harm than good. You should give them sufficient time, maybe a month to prepare your LOR correctly. They need to think over your plus points and highlight them in the LOR. The scarcity of time can affect your chances of admission in the university.

·        Not providing examples to justify their recommendation

The primary objective of the LOR is to justify your accomplishments and ensure you get admission in the university. The recommender will be able to do that only if they provide unique examples that highlight your skills and abilities. Specific examples that prove your leadership qualities can help you nail the admission. A passing reference to your talents will not do the job. The recommender should support the recommendations with unique examples.

·        Not mentioning your weaknesses

The LOR should focus on your strengths and weaknesses in ample measure. No one is perfect in the world. The Admission Officers have enough experience to separate the chaff from the grain. They know which LOR is genuine and which is not by glancing through it. Therefore, ensure that your recommender includes a couple of your shortcomings and how you can overcome them to perform better.

·        Using a cold tone

One has to agree that the LOR is a formal document. However, the recommender can bring in the sense of warmth to it by using your name frequently instead of using the words, ‘the applicant.’ Using your name proves that your recommender knows you well and is this qualified to provide the LOR.

We have thus seen the importance of the LOR and how to write one as well. We have also discussed the necessary points to note as well as the mistakes that one usually makes while preparing the LOR. This information should help you a great deal while applying to foreign universities.

Admission Essays Guide
Admission Essays – A guide to cracking foreign universities

When you apply to foreign universities for higher studies, they would like to judge your candidature. It is to ensure that you deserve admission in their university. The competition to secure admission is intense with people from various countries applying for these courses. There are limited seats, and the numbers of applicants with similar marks are more. Hence, the universities find it a challenging job to select the right candidates. There is a need for a tiebreaker to decide who fits in and who does not. The Admission essays serve as the tiebreakers. Let us discuss what these admission essays are and how to write one.

Admission essays

In simple terms, admission essays are documents sought by universities abroad to determine whether you have enough background knowledge of the subject you wish to pursue. There is no thumb rule or any specified format for the admission essays. Usually, the universities submit a questionnaire for the candidates to answer. Let us see how to tackle the admission essays.

Admission essays Vs. Statement of Purpose

Many people confuse the admission essays with the statement of purpose. It is natural because both these documents have many things in common.

  • Both these documents are in the form of essays.
  • They play a significant role in deciding your admission to the university
  • Both these documents serve as a channel of communication between the candidate and the university.

However, they differ a lot as well.

  • The SOP is a generic essay that speaks about various aspects about the candidates, their interests, the aims and goals, their understanding of the culture of the university, and reasons why the candidates selected the particular university over the others.
  • The admission essays are specific essays that talk about the subject the student proposes to pursue in the university. It is a tool that enables the universities to determine the grasping power of the candidate. For example, an MBA student should have leadership qualities. The University judges whether the candidates have them through these admission essays.
  • SOPs follow a standard format whereas the admission essays do not. The university can decide to break up the admission essays in the form of a question and answer session. It provides all candidates with a level playing field because the questions would be the same for all candidates applying for a particular course.

Different types of admission essays

Let us see the different types of essays that candidates have to write while applying for the foreign universities.

Usually, you classify the essays based on

1. Word Limit – Length of the compositions

  • Concise answers, maybe in a line or two – 30 to 50 words
  • Brief write-ups – around 150 to 200 words
  • Short answer to questions – about 200 to 300 words each
  • Long answers to questions – between 500 and 800 words
  • Full-length essays – More than 800 words

2. Content – What are the questions about

  • Your goals and ambitions
  • Leadership qualities
  • Career progression
  • Tackling ethical dilemmas
  • Your achievements
  • Your Failures
  • Response to specific situations

The questions for the MS courses differ from the MBA courses. The universities look for leadership qualities in an MBA student. They would like to know how a student would react under specific circumstances. It is not the case with the MS courses. Here, you have specific questions about the subject matter to understand the aptitude of the candidate.

Let us how to write a winning admission essay

Admission essays are essential for the MBA courses more than the MS courses. Some universities, especially in the US have a questionnaire form of admission essay as part of their admission form. You have to answer these questions and upload them to the website of the university along with your other documents.

The admission essay gives you the edge for the MBA courses. The universities require admission essays depending on the subject you wish to pursue. The questions can differ from university to university. The admission essays for the MBA courses usually concern leadership qualities. Let us now see how to write a leadership essay.

Leadership essay

An MBA student should display leadership qualities in abundance. The universities will not be able to judge these qualities from the student marksheets. Hence, the admission essays and personal interviews become essential for deciding whether the students have in them or not.

You can expect a couple of challenging questions as part of your admission essay. Some of them are as follows.

  • The university wants to admit one more student to the class this year. Make a compelling argument as to why you deserve to be that specific student. (maximum of 250 to 300 words)
  • Describe a situation you experienced in your office where you managed to deal with challenges posed by the diverse opinions of other members of the group. (about 400 to 500 words)

These are examples of questions that the university can put up. You never know what question might come your way. You have to be ready with your answer supported by examples and anecdotes.

Here are some points you should remember while writing leadership essays

  • The situation can be an imaginary one not necessarily connected with your work. It could be about managing a team. The incident might be a minor or a significant one. The severity of the episode is not an issue. The thing that matters the most is how you managed to handle the situation and come out of it without harming your reputation.
  • It is advisable to state your achievements as a leader, but without going overboard. The Admission Officers are smart enough to distinguish between a genuine situation and a made-up one. It is better to concentrate on your leadership role. They would like to know how you handled the situation. You can describe your way of handling the case. There is no such thing as a wrong answer to such questions. It is because the perception of the situation can differ from person to person. The university would like to know your style. It has to be unique.
  • Avoid using negative words in your essay. Bring in the element of positivity. Your essay should be an inspiring one.
  • There is no need to talk about your failures in a leadership essay. Sometimes, there are specific essays to discuss failures. The Admission Officers would love to see and hear your success stories. However, do not make up a story in such a way that it would seem unreal.
  • Do not try to bluff your way through. The Admission Officers are smart and experienced enough to see through any attempt to fool
  • Never fabricate a story trying to project as an excellent leader. It can have the opposite effect. The Admission Officers are testing your sincerity. After all, they have seen thousands of essays during their careers. They can smell insincerity almost instantaneously.
  • Refrain from making political and sensitive statements.

Vocabulary is vital in an admission essay

English is a simple language. You can express a particular word in different ways using synonyms. For example, the word strength has many synonyms depending on the context you use it. You can substitute it with power, potency, forte, talents, gifts, speciality, and so on. Using the same word repeatedly is a sign that you are not thorough with the English vocabulary. Use grammar correction tools available on the internet to search for suitable synonyms depending on the context. Use the right kind of English (US or UK).

Refrain from using jargon to impress the Admission Officers. You do not like them searching for dictionaries to find out the meaning of what you wish to say. Try to be as simple in your presentation as possible. Imagine yourself to be in their place. What type of words would you prefer to read? The same applies to them as well.

Use of correct grammar is essential

The advantage of computers today is that you can check your spellings and grammar before submitting the essays. The Admission officers look at your communication skills through these essays. A leader is one who can communicate with the followers properly.

  • Use the right tense and do not mix up the verbs
  • Be careful with your prepositions. Your grammar checking tools can help you in this regard
  • Do not use slang as it can have an adverse effect.
  • Punctuation and the use of articles are vital.

Respect the word limit

The Admission Officers have limited time within which they have to decide whether you fit in or not. It is why they have stipulated word limits. Do not transgress these limits by more than 10%. If you cannot make your point clear in 200 words, adding a hundred more is not going to work magic. Remember that short and crisp essays can do the job for you. Make your point forcefully by adhering to the word limits religiously.

The admission essays can help you communicate to the Admission officers that you have the necessary qualities to pursue higher education in the subject of your choice. A well-written essay can clinch the admission for you.

Statement of Purpose
How to write a Statement of Purpose (SOP) for higher education

Any student aspiring to study abroad would have come across the term ‘Statement of Purpose.’ Yes, we are referring to the ‘SOP’ that every foreign university requires you to submit. Let us see what an SOP is and discuss how to write an effective SOP for higher education.

What is an SOP?

SOP is an essay, usually about 800 to 1000 words long describing why you seek admission in the particular university and what makes you the most suitable candidate among the thousands of other applicants.

Remember, the SOP is the only channel available to the student to connect to the Admission Officers and the university and make a lasting impression on their minds. Many universities require you to follow a specific format in the form of a questionnaire. However, most of them ask for a regular statement of purpose.

What does an SOP usually consist of?

SOP usually consists of the following.

  • Your brief background
  • Your achievements in brief
  • Your career goals
  • The career path you have chosen and why
  • Personal motivations that led you to choose the career path
  • Reasons why you preferred the particular university and course over the others
  • Reasons for selecting the country when similar opportunities are available in India (your home country)
  • How to propose to put the teachings of the course into use

The SOP is the only document that enables you to correspond directly with the foreign university. It is your only opportunity to prove that you have unique qualities that make you stand out from the crowd. The SOP plays a vital role in determining your admission to the university.

Points to note when you write a winning SOP?

You know the importance of the SOP. We now come to the vital part as to how to write a winning SOP. Remember, the Admission Officers have to peruse thousands of applications. They do not have much time to go through each SOP in detail. Therefore, the trick to writing a winning SOP is to grab the attention of the Admission Officers and hold them for a sufficiently long time. Keep the following points in mind.

  • Adhere to the format and word count
  • Remember the course you are writing the SOP for
  • Keep your personal profile short and crisp
  • Do not go deep into the marks you obtained in school and college. The information is already available with them.
  • Concentrate on the points that influenced your decision to choose the particular country, university, and course
  • Explain why you do not wish to do the same course in India
  • Focus on the career prospects the intended course has, both in the foreign country as well as in India

The process of writing a winning SOP

  • Prepare a list of all the points you wish to include

Writing an SOP requires a lot of preparation. List out everything you wish to include in the SOP. Make a note of all the details. It should consist of your short-term and long-term goals. Write down everything that comes to your mind. Do not worry about what not to include in the SOP at this stage. We are in the preliminary stage at present. Your SOP will have a lot of editions before you finalize it.

  • Have a theme in mind

Your SOP should have a theme. There should be a specific thought process at work. It is like a jigsaw puzzle. Every piece should fall into place automatically. Have a correct and cohesive flow of thought. Have a goal in mind and work towards achieving that goal. Your SOP should be like a story. One sentence should lead to the other. You should talk about the incidents in your life that prompted you to take up a particular course in your undergraduate studies. Similarly, you should link to your prospective course by quoting anecdotes. You should be able to highlight the turning point in your life that influenced your decision to pursue higher studies.

  • Revisit your list and start pruning down

You have a lot of information on hand now. All these points need not go into your SOP. Sit down and revisit your list. You will find many irrelevant points and duplication of items. Eliminate such things from the list. By now, you should know what goes into the SOP because you have a theme in front of you. Every point you include in the SOP should be consistent with the theme you have in mind. You should also know the points that should not go into the SOP. We shall dwell on the aspects that should and should not go into the SOP at the appropriate time.

Understand that your SOP depends on the course you wish to join. An SOP for MS in Engineering will be different from the SOP for an MBA. Prune the list according to the course and your theme.

  • Research about the course and the University

Do your research about the culture, the alumni, the university, the faculty, the courses on offer, the electives, and so on. You need not go very deep into the details for the simple reason that the Admission Officers know more about their university than you do. The point is that you should attempt to understand the culture of the university and should be able to blend with it. However, if you are pursuing your Ph.D., it is better to include the names of the faculty members and the respective on-going research projects. The Admission officers appreciate such details. Include details about the country and its culture. Explain why you would not prefer to do the same course in India. Research the job opportunities available to you after completion of the course, both in India as well as abroad. Be accurate in your assessments of the salary levels and do not feel shy about stating that you would love to serve their country.

  • Write, edit, rewrite, edit, and so on.

Write everything you have noted down in the proper format. Go through the draft a couple of times. Remember never to send the first draft of the SOP. It will contain a lot of irrelevant information. Edit the SOP and remove the items you feel unnecessary. It is better to have someone else read your SOP to suggest changes. You get an independent view. You might have missed out various points. Some of your points might be unnecessary. A third person view always helps a lot.

What to include in an SOP

You write an SOP to prove your credentials to the Admission Officer of the university. Your SOP should supply information that they cannot find elsewhere. Therefore, you should be aware of what to include in an SOP.

  • Personal and Financial Background – Keep it short

Universities are looking for the extra spark in you, a spark that separates you from the rest. Keep your personal background as short as possible. Focus on how you overcame all odds and completed your graduation. Do not stretch it too much.

  • Extracurricular activities

Not everyone in the world is a national or state level performer in their fields. However, you can highlight achievements in your life that showcase your leadership qualities. It can be events like participating in debates, conducting quiz shows, compering events in college, and so on. The universities look at what kind of a leader you are and not whether you are a leader or not.

  • Your failures in life

No one is perfect in the world. Of course, no one likes to talk about failures, but including a couple of instances should not do you any harm. It shows the Admission officers your capacity to rebound from such failures and succeed in life. It showcases a different side of your personality. It not only indicates your honesty but also shows your confidence levels in bouncing back from adversities. Admission officers like to see such traits in candidates.

  • Work Experience

Not everyone has work experience to write about in the SOP. However, courses like MBA and others require the candidates to have work experience. If you have any work experience, never feel shy to include it in the SOP. Universities always love to have students who have experience in dealing with people and situations. It is an additional qualification.

  • Published works

If you have some published works in your name, highlight the same with the relevant web links. The Admission Officers would love to check them out. It is critical for students pursuing research courses. Having work experience and works published in your name can go a long way in clinching the admission.

What not to include in an SOP

Remember, you submit a host of documents to the university. It includes your marksheets, certificates, degrees, diplomas, and so on. This information is available with the Admission officers. Hence, there is no need to include them in the SOP and cause duplication. It is more important to know what not to include in an SOP rather than what to include.

  • Your academic accomplishments

Your academic accomplishments are available for all to see. Duplicating them in the SOP is not going to help you. Remember, the Admission Officers want to know things that they do not know about you. Hence, including that you have a centum in Mathematics is not necessary. The Admission Officers know that already.

  • Your family history

The Admission Officers want to know more about you and not your family. It does not make any difference to them whether your parents have a royal background or not. They show more concern about the value you bring to the university. Your family history has nothing to do with it. Your family should not find more mention than a single sentence.

  • Financial details

You have to prove your financial capability to complete the course. The Universities seek this information through a separate documentation procedure. Repeating the same information on your SOP is not necessary.

  • Details of your academic projects

You should mention the projects you did during your academic career. However, you should not go to extreme lengths to explain the project to the Academic Officers. Highlight the critical points like your innovativeness, leadership qualities, and what you learned from the project instead of going into the details. The same logic applies to your work experience.

Seek expert opinion

Show your SOP to someone who has the knack of preparing them. They can point out the details you have missed out. They can also help you weed out unnecessary information.

Other points to note

  • Pay attention to the grammar and choice of words.
  • Do not use jargon that requires your Admission Officers to refer to the dictionary.
  • Use simple words and correct punctuation.
  • Never try to bluff your way through the SOP
  • Be sincere and precise in your thoughts
  • Respect the word count

We have just seen the essential points that you should know while writing a winning SOP. Use it and prepare your SOP with full confidence. If you deserve the admission, no one can stop you from getting it.
